FJ Pompeia

São Paulo

Superlimão is designing a new store by designer Fernando Jaeger in an old house in the Pompéia neighborhood of São Paulo. The building, which was once a family home and also a school, underwent a retrofit to meet its current needs. The project began with a more in-depth study of the building, including almost archaeological visits to the basement and attic, where they discovered beautiful brick arches and peroba beams. Large windows, high ceilings and a garden with a view of the SESC Pompéia, a work by Lina Bo Bardi, crowned by a jabuticaba tree, were also striking features of the property and should be preserved. Based on this decision, Superlimão sought to enhance all of these elements and created large, integrated spaces with irregular ceiling heights. To achieve this, the wooden floor, the ceiling and several walls were removed. The structural beams from the removed floor were used as pillars, which have the function of transferring the loads from the roof directly to the brick foundations. This new use allowed the removal of the walls, resulting in two large, lowered rooms, revealing the high ceilings that existed but were previously unexposed. On the main circulation axis of the house, the masonry was simply stripped and the original flooring was maintained. The installation of the new metal-framed warehouse enhanced the axis that is aligned with the SESC Pompéia chimney. And so as not to lose this charming detail, three large tilting doors were created that integrate the interior of the warehouse with the large garden, part of the more than 1000m² of the land. At the back of the warehouse, a large window was made that frames the SESC and can be seen when passing from the old house to the new building, now connected by a large metal ramp. Modern and industrial elements such as electrical conduits, metal guardrails, large iron gates and burnt cement floors were incorporated into the interior of the house and create a harmonious contrast with the architecture of the 20th century and the new elements. A characteristic of the project was the attention to sustainable solutions. To achieve this, Superlimão suggested making better use of natural ventilation and lighting, which provide greater energy efficiency to the building, minimizing electricity costs. In addition, the reuse of materials, rainwater harvesting and lighting with LED lamps were also incorporated. The entire building is surrounded by a lush tropical garden designed by SAPU, Studio de Paisagismo, which offers a pleasant and curious atmosphere with the paradox between the house and the factory, the new and the old. Thus, creating a new stage for the almost century-old building.
