Batman Alley

São Paulo

A spontaneous tourist spot in São Paulo, Batman Beco is located in Vila Madalena, a neighborhood known for its diverse cultural scene, galleries, bars, and restaurants. Since the 1980s, the area has been a hub for artists who use the walls of houses in an alley to create their graffiti art. Attracting an increasing number of national and international visitors, the Beco suffers from a lack of accessibility, signage, and adequate lighting. Furthermore, on days of extreme rain, the Beco can be flooded with 1.5 meters of water in just a few minutes. Since this location is adjacent to Superlimão, a pro bono project was proposed to the city to revitalize the space, improving the disabled areas without altering the authentic characteristics that have made Batman Beco the attraction it is. The project proposes diffuse lighting to increase safety for those using the space at night, as well as expographic lighting to highlight the murals. The paving would be altered to allow accessibility for all, using draining materials and reusing all existing cobblestones, both for flooring and for furniture and urban equipment. To address the high volume of water on rainy days, a curved masonry baseboard would be constructed for improved hydrodynamics, avoiding subsidence of the existing walls. The project was discussed among the community members who have lived there for decades, as well as the community of artists and public authorities. These discussions identified an opportunity to extend the Beco area, establishing a link between the alley between Harmonia and Girassol streets, through a visual connection in the paving, and also between the alley and Beco do Aprendiz. This alley, in turn, is a channel from the Verde River that currently has no access to Girassol Street. The proposal is to create a level floor along the entire route using a metal slab and removing the upper part of the river channel. This way, it's possible to create a closer connection between people and the river. Apprentice Beco would be revitalized, also bringing accessibility, lighting, and a wide variety of murals. Currently, the space is underutilized and has a large area where people feel unsafe to walk.
