Riba
Rio de Janeiro
Located on one of the most classic corners of Rio's bohemian scene in the 1970s, Riba was born. This small, yet detail-rich bar, free of enclosures, boasts a single cement floor from the sidewalk to the bar. The stripped walls reveal the structure of the building with its concrete portico, framing and highlighting the heart of Riba: the kitchen and bar.
In contrast to the rusticity and sobriety of the concrete, the walls and bar were covered in the most traditional floor covering for Rio's dirty feet: tiles. Lurca was called in for this project, mapping out all the surfaces to create a large horizontal panel that runs throughout the bar like a large brushstroke of color, further enhancing the corner. In the bathrooms, there are no boundaries between walls, ceilings, or doors. The tiles permeate the entire space, enhanced by a play of light and mirrors, transforming the visit into a true journey.
The counter, purposefully placed on the corner and with its large glass window, features the most modern refrigeration system, ensuring that craft beers are always served at the ideal temperature.
All the furniture was designed to enhance conversation with friends, with a wide variety of tables, counters, and stools. A special note is the outdoor benches, which, like the bike rack, serve double duty, becoming the bar's closing point at night.
Whether it's for gathering with friends, philosophizing about life, after a Sunday after the beach, or discussing yesterday's game, Riba starts with the air of a place that's always been there and where we always want to be.
