Riba
Rio de Janeiro
Located on one of the most classic corners of Rio's bohemian scene in the 1970s, Riba was born. This small bar, rich in detail, is free of enclosures and has a single cement floor from the sidewalk to the bar, which makes the bar feel like it belongs to the corner and the sidewalk feels like it belongs to the bar. The peeling walls reveal the structure of the building with its concrete portico, framing and highlighting the heart of Riba: the kitchen and bar.
In contrast to the rusticity and sobriety of the concrete, the walls and bar were covered with the most traditional covering for Rio's dirty feet: tiles. Lurca was called in for this task, and they mapped out all the plans to create a large horizontal panel that runs throughout the bar like a large brushstroke of color, further enhancing the corner. In the bathrooms, there are no boundaries between walls, ceilings, or doors. The tiles invade the entire space, which, enhanced by a play of lights and mirrors, make the visit a true journey.
The counter, purposefully placed on the corner and with its large glass window, has the most modern refrigeration system, ensuring that the craft beers are always served at the ideal temperature.
All the furniture was designed to enhance conversations with friends, with a wide variety of tables, counters and benches. A special mention goes to the external benches that, like the bike rack, serve a dual purpose, becoming the bar's closing point at night.
Whether it's for getting together with friends, philosophizing about life, after a Sunday at the beach or to comment on yesterday's game, Riba starts with the air of a place that has always been there and where we always want to be.
